Dosbarth Pedwar (2026/27)

16th October 2026

Busy, Busy, Busy! We are absolutely loving our topic, Fearless Vikings! The children are incredibly enthusiastic, motivated and eager to learn, and their excitement has made this topic a joy to teach.

In Literacy, we have been creating fascinating dragon fact files and imaginative character descriptions, using a variety of language features and writing skills. The children never cease to amaze us with their creativity, rich vocabulary and wonderful imaginations.

In Numeracy, we have been adding different amounts of money and applying our budgeting skills by purchasing Viking produce. The children have enjoyed putting their mathematical knowledge into real-life contexts.

We have also begun constructing our very own Viking longships using junk modelling materials. The children have been challenged to follow specific design requirements and are already showing excellent creativity and problem-solving skills.

As part of Black History Month, we have been studying the work of artist Charlie McGee, who creates stunning and highly intricate black-and-white sculptures. The children have been fascinated by his unique artwork, and we are hoping to create our own inspired pieces soon. Watch this space!

In Forest School, we explored the idea of a "Sit Spot." There is so much happening in nature all around us every moment of the day: buzzing insects, fluttering butterflies, drifting clouds, spiders weaving their webs and ants busily carrying out their work. But do we always notice? Have you ever taken the time to simply sit, watch and wonder? A sit spot is the perfect opportunity to slow down, observe and appreciate nature's countless mysteries as they unfold around us. Sometimes the best way to explore nature is to let nature come to you.

Building on our learning about Viking diets, we are now investigating how Vikings preserved food during long sea voyages and throughout the harsh winter months. The children are discovering the clever methods Vikings used to store food and survive during challenging times.

It has been another fantastic week of learning, creativity, and discovery in Year 4. Thank you for your continued support!

2nd October 2026

We have made a fantastic start to our new topic, Fearless Vikings! In Literacy, we have been exploring the character traits and appearances of dragons using powerful descriptive language. The children identified synonyms with the help of a thesaurus to enhance and elaborate on their descriptions. We then created a simile dragon bank to help us write even more vivid and engaging sentences about dragons. This week, we took a short break from our dragon work to enter a poetry competition based on the theme of Autumn. The children used literary devices such as personification and alliteration to create imaginative and expressive poems. In Topic, we have been learning about the food that Vikings ate and how they obtained it. We compared their diet to our own and concluded that Vikings actually had a very healthy and balanced diet. We are now beginning to create our own Viking Trading Post, where the children can use their imagination while consolidating and applying mathematical skills they have been learning in class. As always, the children never cease to amaze us with their creativity, enthusiasm, and brilliant ideas.  In maths we have been using counters pictorially to support our learning in column addition. This has really helped the children as the sums become more challenging and using the bigger numbers.  Thank you for your support in the church this year for our Harvest. It was lovely to see so many of you in the congregation to listen to the service and our singing which the children worked so hard to learn.  We have had our first visit to forest school of the Autumn term this week.  The children enjoyed creating obstacle courses using resources from around the forest and challenged teams to complete their obstacles.   Thank you for your support.
