5th December 2025
With another busy fortnight complete, Reception have been busy little elves creating their enterprise products for the Christmas fayre next week – we hope to see you there! With our Nativity performance just around the corner, the children have been working hard learning the songs and building their confidence to stand on stage and perform. A big milestone was achieved this week as we came to the end of learning all of the speed set one sounds in Read Write. Where you can, please support your child in learning and recapping them to support recognition and pronunciation. To support our enterprise, we have also been learning about money. The children have been sorting and classifying 1p,2p,5p and 10p coins. Miss Light and Miss Ward were also very impressed with the fact that some children were also able to recognise other coins like 20p, 50p and £1. We discussed how we can recognise the coins along with their similarities and differences such as colour, size and shape. We finished the week by spreading festive cheer to our community by singing our nativity songs at Trellech Teas. A huge thank you to those of you who were able to come along and support the children today. I’m sure you’ll agree they were amazing! With it being a very busy time of year – I hope you all enjoy getting in the festive spirit as well as taking some time for yourselves. For now, have a lovely weekend! Take care, Miss Light

I will begin this week’s fortnightly update by sending my thoughts to anyone who was impacted by the sad event of the floods in Monmouth over the weekend. I hope you along with your family members / friends are safe and well. If there is anything we can do to further support, please do not hesitate to reach out. As a school, we understand the importance of our community and the value it holds for us all.
Over the past fortnight, the children have certainly become very festive with our Nativity practice and enterprise products. We have been busy starting to design our products and look forward to sharing the final outcomes with you. In Maths, we have been introduced to the concept of addition. Last week we started to build an understanding of recognising both the add and equals sign along with the discussion of how when adding two numbers together, the outcome / answer can be bigger. To support our pictorial learning, we have been using cubes to show the amounts and combing them together by counting to find the overall answer. Some of us have even advanced to writing number sums this week – very impressive! We have also been thinking about rights. We understand that we have the right to have a name and have been decorating them to display in our learning environment. Last week, we learnt about the importance of Remembrance Day and why it is so significant. The children built an understanding of the life cycle of the poppy as well as it’s different features through a dance. We also met Detective Duck, who helped us learn how to stay safe online with his ‘dos and don’ts’ rules. Whatever the weekend holds and hopefully a much calmer one... I hope you all take some time for yourself. I look forward to seeing both you and the children on Monday. Take care, Miss Light

Croeso yn ol! Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely half term with some well-deserved rest in preparation for what’s set to be a busy half term. Before half term we learnt about Diwali – what it is, what it means and how it is celebrated. The children enjoyed learning about diya lamps and making their own with clay. We are looking forward to decorating them this week ready to bring home. We also learnt about rangoli patterns where we were able to link them to our maths and create our own patterns using 2D shapes. The children also learnt a song and dance about Diwali. We hope you enjoyed hearing our song on Seesaw. It was a fantastic opportunity to experiment with instruments and play them to a rhythm / beat. This week we have continued working hard to learn the next set of sounds and have also been introduced to our blending boards which are supporting us to spell practically using our magnetic letters. The children also began to learn some of their nativity songs which we are really excited about and are looking forward to starting the practice for it next week with Year 1. For now, I hope you have a lovely weekend. I look forward to welcoming both you and the children back to school on Monday. Take care, Miss Light

Where have the past severn weeks gone? I can’t quite believe that the children have nearly completed their first half term of school. Time is flying by and they’ve all already achieved so much in such a short space of time. Over the past fortnight, we have began Read Write Inc and are making good progress in learning all of our new sounds. We are working hard to recognise them as well as form them and write our names independently. We’ve also been enjoying playing our Fred games verbally where we have to tell Miss Light and Miss Ward the words Fred’s trying to make. We’ve heard all about Fred’s trip to the farm, his party and what’s inside his fridge! In maths, the children have been busy sorting and classifying their class hair and eye colours. The children used pictures of their peers and had to go and find them to work out the correct colour before putting it in the matching hoop. We made predictions at the start of the lessons and compared our final results to see if we were right. Some of us were also able to show our results as amounts using conkers. To support our learning of diversity, we have also been exploring the same but different in maths. The children made different amounts using teddy bears before discussing what made their amounts the same but different. This week, we started forest school and enjoyed becoming familiar with the forest surroundings and log circle rules. Today we showed our support by wearing red to show racism the red card which has supported our learning about diversity. To bring our harvest learning to a close, we also looked at where our food comes from before it goes to the supermarket. This supported the children’s understanding about the importance of farmers and how fruit and veg can be grown. I would like to thank you all for your continued support. I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing both you and the children on Monday. Take care, Miss Light

It’s been yet another busy fortnight for Dosbarth Derbyn. This fortnight we have been focussing heavily on looking at our number formation of numbers between 0-10. We have been doing lots of singing and working hard to learn all the different rhymes. We now know that 0-9 has a rhyme and anything above 10 we need to combine the rhymes. We have also been looking at our emotions and building an understanding of the different ones we can feel as well as when we feel them. This has linked well to our Welsh where we have been learning a song all about emotions in Welsh to support our learning further next week. We’ve also been enjoying learning about Harvest in terms of what it is and why / how it can be celebrated. I’m sure you’ll agree the children did a fantastic performance yesterday at the church during our Harvest service. I was incredibly proud of them for their first one here with us at Trellech. Our digital skills have also been put to the test, where we have been learning how to take photos of each-other along with using digital paint to create our houses. Last week we also used our digital skills to record ourselves reciting colours in Welsh based off different items that we found in the class. To continue our topic, we have also been looking at similarities and differences between ourselves and our classmates, where we discussed what things we had the same and what things made us different from one another. We are building our understanding that we are all different in certain ways and that is okay because that’s what makes us unique. If you were able to join the Read Write Inc parent session yesterday, I would like to say thank you again for attending. For now, I hope you have a lovely weekend, and I look forward to welcoming both you and children back to school on Monday. Take care – Miss Light.

Here we are at the end of the children’s first fortnight of full days at school. I cannot express how proud I am of the children and how quickly they are adapting and settling into the routines of the school. There’s been lots of ‘firsts’ over this fortnight. The children have experienced their first whole school assemblies as well as their first golden assembly today. They’ve settled into the routine of mixing with their peers in Year 1 and 2 during break and lunch as well as completing their first full week of the daily mile. We’ve also been focussing a lot on talking about our family and friends. We’ve talked about our homes, pets, likes and dislikes as well as our emotions. It has all tied in nicely to our topic learning of ‘Ti a fi- You and me.’ The children have looked at counting recognising and ordering numbers between 0-5 and 0-10 as well showing the number as an amount using cubes. Everyday we learn to follow new instructions but this week the children have been instructing eachother. They have worked in pairs to instruct their partners about something draw. The children drew some fabulous pictures and demonstrated beautifully how able they are to listen to their peers. We’ve also been doing lots of singing this week about the colours of the rainbow in Welsh as well as beginning to learn our Harvest song ready for Harvest Festival. To support our Welsh, we used a colour wheel to find objects that matched the colour and verbally discussed what colours we had in Welsh when asked ‘pa lliw? – what colour?’ Da iawn – Well done everyone! You’re doing so well! I hope you all have a lovely weekend, and I look forward to welcoming both you and the children back on Monday. Take care, Miss Light

Croeso i Trellech! – Welcome to Trellech! It has been a pleasure to welcome all of the new pupils this week to begin the start of their school learning journey here with us at Trellech. We have spent lots of time getting to know each other, our school and the different routines. We discussed our class charter as well as began our Usk show entries. The children have also completed their first set of self and family portraits. The children collected different natural materials to use for their entries and explored water colours to bring them to life. It was lovely to sit and watch the children create their self and family portraits as it gave us an opportunity to hear more about their families and get to know them better. If you were able to join us after Friday’s morning and afternoon sessions, then I would like to say thank you again. We hope you enjoyed seeing and becoming more familiar with your child’s new learning environment during their time in Reception. It was also a great opportunity to get to know you all better. I look forward to getting to know you all further over the course of this year. I’m looking forward to welcoming back both you and the children next week where we can begin our first week altogether as a whole class. For now, have a lovely weekend! Take care, Miss Light
