Dosbarth Dau

Croeso dosbarth dau! Welcome to Year Two!

W/C December 1st 2025

Shwmae pawb! What another busy fortnight in Trellech. In year 2 we have been researching and planning a non-chronological report on Victorian childhood. Da iawn to the children for carrying out work at home to help them with this. They have included lots of facts about work, school, clothing, toys, health and housing. I am really looking forward to their completed reports.

In numeracy we have been adding amounts of money, converting between pennies and pounds and solving written problems too. We have started to gather data for our enterprise work and place that data in tally charts and bar graphs.

We are working like busy little elves alongside Year 3 to create some wonderful gifts for our enterprise.

In readiness for our festive sing-a-long on December 12th we have been working really hard, learning songs and actions and jokes and the children are looking forward to performing for you.

WC 17th November

Shw mae! I hope everybody is safe and well following the terrible weather conditions that Monmouthshire has endured.

We have been as busy as usual in school with lots of learning going on inside and outside the classroom.  In numeracy we have been recognising coins, creating amounts of money and adding amounts to buy our shopping from our shopping lists. In literacy we have completed our retell of the Rainbow Fish story using exciting openers (adverbs), time and question openers. I really enjoyed reading those. During our ICT lesson we looked online safety using the Common Sense scheme. Here we related parts of our body to how we can be sensible online. For example: the heart is used so we can be kind and respectful, the head to make decisions, the arms to balance us out with time online and those breaks between. The children have been continuing to carry out their road safety lessons and the training has come in handy when crossing the roads for forest schools. Year two showed so much respect during our two-minute silence for Remembrance Day and created some thoughtful shape poems based on poppies. Well done to the children on their Pudsey Run which unfortunately had to be delayed. To keep fit and follow the theme of this year’s children in need we spent some time with year three’s carrying out a little danceathon which we all really enjoyed.

3rd November 2025

Croeso yn ôl! Welcome back! I hope that you have had an enjoyable half term. It is certainly getting colder.  Before we broke up, the pupils were busy writing descriptive paragraphs based on an autumnal scene. They did well to include lots of exciting adjectives to describe their senses as if they were actually experiencing the scene first hand. This week we have been reenacting and sequencing the story ‘Rainbow Fish’. We have started to write sentences with exciting adverb openers such as ‘suddenly’ and ‘excitedly’. In numeracy we have been doubling two and three-digit numbers and looking at the properties of 2D shapes. In order to embed the skills learnt we have been using matchsticks to make the shapes and have been creating abstract art using 2D shapes only. These were great! Please see pictures below. In Welsh we have been learning how to say what we do not like and asking and answering what hair/eye colour we have. Pa lliw ydy dy gwallt di?What colour hair do you have?  Mae gwallt….da fi. I have…hair. Pa lliw ydy dy llygaid di? What colour eyes do you have? Mae llygaid…da fi. I have …eyes.  We have been learning about the life of Victorian school children. It certainly opened eyes and made us aware of how lucky we really are.

17th October 2025

We have almost come to the end of our first half term in Blwyddyn Dau. It has flown by! It has been very busy indeed. The pupils have rewritten the ‘Owl Babies story’ using great descriptions and written their own acrostic poem based on Autumn. Some children were challenged with Autumn Days. We listed lots of relevant vocabulary beforehand so we could do a great job of the poems.

In numeracy we have been measuring with non-standard and standard units (cm). The pupils enjoyed measuring their toy pets in the vets role play area and measuring each other's legs to see whose were longest. They have also been counting in 10s, 20s, 50s 100s and 200s.

The pupils have been increasing their confidence with asking questions and answering in Welsh. They have asked where their friends live, gathered the data and input on J2E data to create a bar chart.

Pupils have been recording differences and similarities with the fire brigade over time observing changes to uniform and equipment.  In health and wellbeing, we have looked at article 28 of the UNICEF children’s rights, specifically the right to an education. To promote kind hands and feet we took part in a positive touch session where we used gentle massage techniques. This teaches pupils how to be aware of other’s feelings and to be respectful. The children loved this!

In explore time the pupils worked really well together to make a fire engine. At forest school we were able to use our measuring skills to find objects greater or less than a given amount.

3rd October 2025

Shw mae! Sut wyt ti?

Dosbarth dau have been busy with learning skills for their next piece of writing in literacy. They have been writing question sentences and using adjectives for the story: Owl Babies. Once again we have been practising the use of time openers, sequencing the story and reenacting it in groups. Pupils used enhanced learning to create sentences.

In numeracy we have enjoyed the outdoors drawing number lines and frog hopping along these to solve addition and subtraction problems. We have also been rounding to the nearest 10 using a little rhyme: if 4 and below (in the units column) down we go, so we round down. Five and above up with the dove! So we round to the next multiple of 10.

We have been asking and answering the question:  Ble rwyt ti’n byw? Where do you live? In our Welsh lessons as well as asking Ga i...? May I have...?

In P.E we have continued with rugby skills; learning to avoid other players with cones and in Canterbury squares, where pupils run diagonally to their partner and give the ball avoiding another pair running in the opposite diagonal. Tricky but the children got it and did well. In our indoor PE session the children made the most of the wall bars. Some were nervous at first but I was so proud of them as everyone conquered their fears and found lots of ways to get from one side to the other.

Thank you to Mrs Cornish and Mrs Weekes, the children have been planting daffodil bulbs in readiness for the spring. We also had our first forest school visit learning about expectations and how we can care for nature.

19th September 2025

Shw mae! Another busy fortnight in year 2. We have been enjoying the story of the enormous turnip in our literacy lessons. The children have listened to the story, reenacted choosing the different roles, sequenced the story and begun to create time opener sentences in order to rewrite.

In numeracy we have continued work on making 2- and 3-digit numbers, partitioning them (splitting them up) and recognising the digit values. We have also been working hard on the x2 tables. Our expressive arts work and handwriting were completed in readiness for the Usk show and we were impressed with the entries. The children have been having fun revising Welsh sentence patterns and learning new language too.

5th September 2025

Croeso yn ol! Welcome back! It’s been lovely meeting my new year twos. The children have settled into their new surroundings and have been getting used to their new routines.

In literacy we have been revising letter formation and ordering our alphabet. We have also ordered words alphabetically. In numeracy the pupils have been revising number formation, recording number bonds to 20, recognising odds and evens and recognising place value. Our topic will be ‘People who help us’, so the children have been listing those people and creating their own topic title page in their journey books.

Some dates: P.E will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Forest school will be alternate Fridays starting in October. I will keep you update of the actual start date. Reading: We will listen to your child at least twice a week. Home reading books will be changed once a week after they have been read three times, and three comments are made at home. Diolch!
