It has been a pleasure to welcome the children into Year 1. We have spent lots of time getting to know one another, settling into our new classroom and becoming familiar with our new routines and surroundings.

We have had a busy and exciting start to the term. In Maths, we have been refreshing our counting skills, ordering numbers and exploring numbers in a variety of ways. We have even been practising a counting song yn Gymraeg! The children have also been revisiting number bonds to 10 and using themselves to create groups that make 10.

In Literacy, we started the term by writing independently about our summer holidays. The children were eager to share their experiences and we discovered that many of us had observed the recent solar eclipse in different ways. We then began our writing journey by retelling The Three Little Pigs through discussion, drawing and writing. The children worked hard to improve their storytelling by using time connectives to sequence events correctly. We are now planning our next piece of writing: describing our dream houses.

As part of our topic, Street Detectives, we have begun exploring ourselves, our families and our homes. In Welsh, we have been learning to talk about our families and where we live. Da iawn pawb! The children have also been writing about their homes and families while learning that every family is unique and special.

In Science, we have been learning about our five senses, the parts of the body responsible for each sense and how we use them in everyday life. The children enjoyed using iPads to label the senses on photographs of themselves.

We have also completed our artwork for the Usk Show. A huge diolch to everyone who brought in pinecones, conkers, acorns and leaves to help us with our creations. The children have worked incredibly hard and shown great creativity in producing their individual pieces of artwork.

It has been a busy but wonderful start to the term, and I would like to thank all the children and families for making me feel so welcome. I am looking forward to an exciting year ahead.
