Shw mae pawb!
During the last two weeks, pupils have been subtracting single digit numbers from both one and two-digit numbers. We have been providing the children with a variety of methods to help them carry out these operations. We have also revisited place value ensuring the basic building blocks of maths are in place to be able to move on to more complex work.
In Welsh sessions we have been revising colours by describing houses such as ‘Dwi’n byw mewn ty porffor’/ I live in a purple house. The pupils had fun describing or drawing aliens with different coloured hair and eyes and then writing about them. For example: Mae gwallt coch ac mae llygaid oren da fi/ I have red hair and orange eyes.
The pupils have learnt why it was important for the Romans to come to Wales and have found out the past times of the Roman soldiers, such as playing dice, fishing, weapons practise, attending the amphitheatre and bathing.
The pupils’ motor skills have been improving when moving and passing a rugby ball backwards. They are more confident with doing this at a quicker pace.
In Literacy, we have been focusing on the text Ruby's worry and writing a tool kit on what you can do if you have a worry. In the build-up to this work the children developed their speaking and listening skills, by playing with a partner to take in turns to give 5 suggestions, on what strategies they use to cope with a worry. They also had to think of different ones to their talking partner. These have been filmed and we look forward to sharing them on seesaw with you.
The children have also enjoyed learning about Article 15 the right to have friends and join in with clubs. Here, they all discussed what groups and clubs they belong to and how it makes them feel, to then design and create their own dream clubs! This ranged from unicorn club, detective club to science club to list a few!

Shw mae pawb,
Yet another busy week in Year Two!
In numeracy lessons, pupils have been partitioning two and three-digit numbers to recognise the hundreds, tens and ones within a number. We have also used the ‘Hungry Crocodile’ to determine whether a number is greater than or less than another number, for example: 78 > 68.
The children have revised colours in Welsh and have been telling us where they live using phrases such as “Dwi’n byw yn Trellech.”
I have been really pleased with the progress in our rugby lessons. The children are now jogging and passing the ball backwards in a line. Ffantastig! During indoor PE, we have been developing our gymnastics skills, focusing on different types of rolls and working collaboratively to perform sequences of movements on mats.
In Expressive Arts and Design, we have been exploring our Roman topic by designing our own Roman shields. During enhanced provision, the children have also used LEGO to recreate and build their shield designs, demonstrating great creativity and problem-solving skills.
In literacy, our class text has been Perfectly Norman. Inspired by the story, we have written character descriptions about ourselves, using ambitious adjectives to describe our personalities, strengths and interests.
We have also enjoyed many wonderful stories during our ‘Think While We Drink’ sessions and have spent lots of time exploring all areas of the classroom. It has been lovely to see the children developing their independence, resilience and creativity through their learning and play.
Da iawn, Dosbarth Dau! Have a lovely weekend everyone. š
13th September 2026
Welcome back to a new school year in Dosbarth Dau! We have had a wonderful first two weeks back and are delighted with how well the children have settled into their new class. They are becoming increasingly familiar with our new routines and classroom layout and have approached every new challenge with enthusiasm and positivity. One of our first tasks this term was to create our Class Charter. The children worked together to discuss the values that are important to us and the expectations we have for ourselves and each other. This has linked beautifully to our class book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? Through the story, the children have explored ways in which we can "fill" someoneÄ·s bucket through acts of kindness, encouragement and friendship, as well as discussing behaviours that can "dip" someoneÄ·s bucket. They have used their understanding to write a set of instructions explaining how to be a good bucket filler. In Maths, we have been busy revising and recapping number bonds and the 2 times table through a range of practical activities, games and challenges. The children have enjoyed working collaboratively and challenging themselves to improve their fluency and confidence. We have also been very creative making our rosettes for the Usk Show. Using paper concertinas and a variety of different materials, the children designed and created their own unique rosettes. As part of the activity, we discussed different prize categories and came up with lots of exciting ideas, including Best Young Gardener, Best Cake Baker and other creative awards. As part of our Rights Respecting Schools work, we have been learning about the Right to an Education and discussing what this right means to us as individuals and as a class. The children have shared some thoughtful ideas about why education is important and how it helps us to learn, grow and achieve our dreams. We have also introduced our exciting new topic, "ThereÄ·s No Place Like Rome!" The children are already looking forward to finding out more about the Romans and the impact they had on Britain. If you have any books, artefacts or resources related to this topic that you would be willing to lend to the class, we would be very grateful. Please ensure that any items brought into school are clearly labelled with your childÄ·s name.
The children are beginning to familiarise themselves again with Welsh vocabulary so we have been playing a variety of games to ensure the learning is fun.
Our outdoor PE sessions are introducing the skills needed for rugby. The boys and girls have been honing their throwing and catching skills using a football, progressing to holding and passing the rugby ball to a partner correctly.
Thank you for your continued support. We are looking forward to a fantastic term ahead filled with exciting learning opportunities.
Best wishes,
Mrs Maguire and Mr Green
