25.11.24-6.12.24

Prynhawn da, Dosbarth 3 have had such a busy two weeks developing a range of skills throughout the curriculum. In maths, the children have been using practical equipment to develop their multiplication skills and draw HTO tables to complete addition and subtraction problems using 3 – digit numbers. It has been lovely to see the children grow in confidence in their jotting skills and apply these to everyday tasks, such as budgeting for the prices of Christmas decorations in preparation for Enterprise Week. The children have also enjoyed exploring the outdoors and have made habitats in the Forest School area and prepared for Christmas by using natural materials to create the most amazing Advent candle wreaths.  To continue with our topic, the children have developed their DCF skills and have researched landmarks that are important to them in their own villages. The children will use the images to create a flip book of their special places in Wales.  It has been a very interesting two weeks in our Literacy tasks, as the mystery visitor continues to be an enigma. This week the children were left a suitcase containing lots of exciting clues, an old weighing scales, Cawl recipe, diary extract and tickets to board a ship.  The children discussed their findings within groups and analysed the evidence.

Prynhawn da. We have had such a fantastic two weeks filled with lots of practical learning and investigations. The children have continued to develop their place value jotting skills by exploring addition and subtraction using 3-digit numbers and fractional values in shapes and numbers. Following pupil voice feedback, the children wanted to use their fraction skills to make pizzas. The class therefore had an amazing afternoon using fractions and number skills to weigh out the ingredients to make the pizza dough. Working in groups the children used amazing cutting skills to chop the healthy toppings and divide them between each other. It was so lovely to have the opportunity to seize the season and incorporate the unexpected snow in Year 3’s learning too. The children investigated shapes by catching snowflakes and discussing what they could see and how each snowflake was unique. As part of our topic, “Love where we live” the children sculpted Trellech village out of snow and used problem solving skills to make igloos. There was lots of excitement in Year 3, as one day we returned from breaktime to find someone has been in the class and it was now a scene for a police investigation. The children worked in groups to find clues and come up with a suspect list. This will continue next week, and we look forward to finding the mystery visitor and sharing it with you.

Prynhawn da. The first half term has certainly flown by with lots of fun and super learning. The children have continued to develop their place value number skills by linking different concepts together using ‘If I know, then I know’ explanation skills. Here, the children are using known strategies and number facts to develop their mental maths skills. The children have also explored co–ordinates and used this within their outdoor PE sessions and literacy tasks when planning their story. To aid their ideas, children created their own rooms for the 13 Story Treehouse. There were so many amazing ideas such as fountains, slides and much more.  Using their imaginative characters the children have planned and written fantastic short stories with lots of quality language and a variety of sentence starters.  In preparation for their stories the children recorded a news bulletin describing the events within the story. I was so impressed how the children not only planned and wrote their bulletin but then went onto record, edit and import the videos into iMovies.  We are extremely excited to be part of this year's Spring Bulb Project which is led by Cardiff Museum. Each child within the class has planted a crocus and a daffodil bulb to be cared for throughout the coming months until they bloom in Spring. The class has been given a calendar to note down the temperature and the rainfall each day. Once the data is gathered this will be submitted to the museum who will use the information to explore climate change in Wales. We are delighted to be involved in the project as it is so important to our environment.

Prynhawn da. We have had a fantastic two weeks in Year 3 and have continued to explore our class text, 13 Storey Treehouse. In literacy, the children have investigated the features of a newspaper and used post it notes to explain their findings. Following the task the children presented confidently to everyone, on what they had found and why it was an important feature within the newspaper. Using the text as inspiration the children have combined animals to make their own magical creature. The children have planned their own newspaper report based on their imaginative character. The character will then be used over the next few weeks to develop the children’s story writing skills. In maths the children have explored number patterns and place value using the number square. They have used number jumps to find the pattern and then continue the sequence, the children enjoyed this so much they then challenged their friends by creating their own sequences of number. As part of the topic, Year 3 have looked at an old map of Trellech and designed their own version of the Trellech Coat of Arms. These were amazing and a lot of time and detail was added to create such a fantastic design. The children then worked in small groups to combine their ideas and create a coat of arms using Adobe Express. This was their first time using Adobe and I was very impressed with how well the children followed the instructions and completed the task successfully.

Year 3 have had a fantastic return to school since the summer holidays and have come back with lots of enthusiasm and news, which has been lovely to share. During the first week the children completed handwriting and art for the Usk Show. Everyone produced superb pieces of work! This term the class will explore the topic ‘Love where you live’. The children have begun the topic by creating their own planning ideas, asking questions concerning what they would like to discover about Trellech and beyond. All their amazing questions will become an integral part of the learning moving forward. The children have investigated various maps, locating South Wales and the counties within their locality. During Commando Joe sessions, the children will follow an American journalist called Nellie Bly, who's travelled around the globe leading investigations and undercover reporting. Therefore, this week the children have used their problem solving and mapping skills to create a world map using a range of sports equipment. Year 3 has become extremely engaged in our new text, 13 Storey Treehouse. We have read the first three chapters, and the children have compared the main characters using a Venn diagram to sort adjectives.  The children have also been using their ICT skills to complete computer-based assessments. Here the children showed perseverance, and all completed the tasks feeling very proud of themselves. I am also very proud of their efforts too, da iawn Year 3!
